John Reed is an American Fine Art Pianist and Composer located in New Jersey, USA. He has written for a variety of ensembles, including piano, choir, string quartet, and trio. Combining his admiration of J.S. Bach with the needs of an ever-increasingly complex musical landscape, John's music is entwined with polyphonic figurations and nuanced harmonic language. As a young composer, John flourished under the meticulous instruction of notable teachers Benjamin C.S. Boyle, and Stefan Young, learning in the footsteps of Nadia Boulanger's disciples. As a pianist, John studied with Paul Hoffmann, professor emeritus of Rutgers University. Through Hoffmann’s strikingly precise pedagogy, John’s pianistic studies brought him through much of the concert repertoire, as well as less well-known composers. This wide range of music became an intrinsic part of John as a performer, helping navigate a myriad of musical styles.

In 2018, John graduated from Westminster Choir College of Rider University with highest honors, receiving his B.M in Music Composition, History, and Theory, with a focus in Piano Performance, studying with Phyllis Lehrer. During his undergraduate studies, John received a scholarship for his high academic marks, and was awarded the Ruth and Raymond Young Composition Prize in 2017 for his orchestral work, "The Events of a Normal Day", which was premiered by the Westminster Community Orchestra in April 2017, under the baton of Ruth Ochs.

In 2025, John received his Masters of Music from Rowan University, studying with NYC composer Hannah Selin, and pianist Veda Zuponcic. In November, “The Black Riders”, a song cycle of poetry by Stephan Crane was premiered in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, by soprano Madison Zahorsky.
